Few advisors have actually run what they now advise on. Dr. Geneva Williams has.
She spent decades leading nonprofit organizations as CEO. She led United Way in Detroit through the merger of two United Ways and founded and led a nationally recognized cross-sector organization for ten years, bringing together government, philanthropy, business, and community partners around complex public challenges.
She has been the executive making the decision, the board member responsible for governing through it, and the interim leader called in when an organization needed stability and clarity about what came next.
Why This Work Matters to Me
I grew up in a family where education, public service, and community mattered. My parents championed civil rights and believed deeply in the responsibility we have to leave our communities stronger than we found them.
That belief has stayed with me throughout my career.
I have seen firsthand what strong nonprofit leadership can make possible. I have also seen what happens when capable leaders and boards are asked to make difficult decisions under pressure, with too little time, unclear roles, competing interests, and a great deal at stake.
Mission matters. But heart alone is not enough.
Nonprofit leaders are responsible for people, money, reputation, public trust, and organizations that communities depend on. When leadership is changing or a difficult decision has to be made, experienced judgment matters.
That is why I do this work.
Experience From Inside the Room
Dr. Geneva has spent more than four decades leading organizations, boards, partnerships, and major institutional change.
Her experience includes leading a major nonprofit merger and its integration, building a nonprofit organization from the ground up, working directly with boards and funders, facilitating complex public-private initiatives, and serving in leadership roles appointed by six Michigan governors and five Detroit mayors.

She earned her doctorate from Wayne State University, with a concentration in educational leadership and public policy, and is the author of Justice on the Jersey Shore.
Today
Today, Dr. Geneva advises nonprofit leaders and boards through succession and leadership continuity, governance under pressure, mergers, partnerships, and other consequential organizational decisions.
Every situation is different. Her role is to help leaders see what is really happening, think clearly about what comes next, and make sound decisions before urgency, politics, or uncertainty take over.
